Calling all owners of large breed dogs – heart screen offer

ARUN V G-443

We would like to invite you to bring your large or giant breed dog to the practice to discuss a screening programme for a type of heart disease called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) which we are currently offering at a reduced price.

As you may be aware, certain large and giant breeds of dogs over the age of 3 years are at an increased risk of developing DCM. Predisposed breeds include–

Great Danes
Irish Wolfhounds
German Shepherds
St Bernards
Bernese Mountain dogs

DCM is a condition where the heart muscle becomes stretched and weakened over time. There are two phases to DCM; firstly a long “silent” phase in which the heart has the disease and is slowly deteriorating but there are no outward signs of a problem. Dogs in this first phase appear outwardly healthy and happy. The second phase is a shorter “overt” phase where the heart can no longer cope and starts to fail. At this point outward signs of heart failure start to be seen. Early diagnosis can enable earlier use of medication which may help to delay the onset of clinical symptoms.

As dogs in the first phase of the disease appear outwardly normal it is difficult to identify which dogs have the problem without performing tests. A simple 3-step screening programme is available; the first step involves a vet checking your dog over and assessing the heart with a stethoscope. The second step involves performing a blood test. This blood test measures the levels of a substance called pro-BNP which is released into the blood stream when the heart muscle is damaged, such as in dogs with DCM. The third step is a non-painful, non-invasive ultrasound scan of the heart for those dogs that have high pro-BNP blood test results to visually asses the heart muscle wall.

If your dog is over 3 years old and is one of the breeds that is predisposed to DCM we would strongly advise that you bring them in for a heart check-up . The good news is that we are currently offering the proBNP test and a consultation at a combined rate of £60 (the normal fee would be £134.63)
